Helping Your Sore Feet After Your Shift Ends

Helping Your Sore Feet After Your Shift Ends

It’s no huge secret that hospital workers are a different breed. Not only do they work in a high-stress, fast paced environment, but they also end up working about a 12 hour shift at a time – most of it on their feet. That can easily lead to some sore muscles and bones, but nothing compares to the sore feet a lot of medical workers have when they finally make it home.

While there are plenty of tools and techniques out there for reducing things like odor on the job or discomfort – things like our Fit Scrubs, designed for maximum comfort and with antimicrobial properties – it’s harder to find the right ways to reduce foot pain. We’ve found a few tips that can help, however, and keeping them in mind may be just what you need to escape from punishing sore feet when you get home at night – or in the morning.

  • If The Shoe Fits… - Your shoes are the foundation of your entire shift, and your foot health. New studies have found that shoes with the heel elevated by about ¼ inch and with good arch support are the best for long shifts. If you need extra help. Find insoles and add them to your shoe for even more comfort.
  • Moist Heat – Yep, the old foot bath still really is one of the best options out there. Soaking your feet in warm water for about 10 minutes will make a big impact on pain. For adding effect, using Epsom salts in the water will help even more.
  • Massage – Using a bit of oil and applying pressure with your thumbs to the sore areas of your feet is a simple way to provide some relief, too. Try to focus on sore areas and in particular on the Plantar fascia.
  • Stretch It Out – Finally, stretching really helps. This has a big effect right after a soak, but you can stretch at any time – even during your shift. Stretching ankles, feet, and calves can greatly reduce your foot pain after a shift.

Simply put, your feet are something you count on every day. The tips above can help ensure that you get a relaxing few hours at home without the pain that so many feel in their feet regularly. Little things can make a big difference, and pain-free feet are something that will certainly help you enjoy your work and your life a bit more.
